Job Description
The Town of Bel Air is accepting applications for the position of Full Time Laborer in the Department of Public Works.
This position requires the performance of manual labor as directed.
Work may include such activities as landscaping, street and sidewalk work, snow/ice removal, garbage and trash removal, recycling, and event setup and takedown.
Requirements include high school diploma or equivalent, valid noncommercial driver’s license, safe and proper operation of various hand and power tools, capable of lifting 100 lbs.
Qualified applicants must pass a background check, physical exam, and drug test.
Responsibilities Mows and trims grass using a standard push mower, weed eater, and leaf blower Uses hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammer, screwdriver, push mower, plate tamper, hand tamper, blacktop lute, sockets, wrenches, generators, pumps, and hand trucks Uses power tools, under supervision, such as hand drill, circular saw, sawzall, drill, hammer drill, jigsaw, table saw, concrete cutoff saw (walk behind and handheld), soil compactor, concrete vibrator, snow blower, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, pole saw, and pneumatic equipment such as a jackhammer Operate vehicles or equipment such as dump truck, flatbed dump truck, stake body, pickup truck, power sweeper, brush chipper, roller, track paver, loader, tractor, air compressor, and crack sealer Breaks up, removes, and loads concrete, asphalt, and other demolition materials Helps with paving operations by shoveling hot asphalt Cuts down trees, performs excavation work by hand, cleans out sanitary and storm sewer manholes, and helps clear sewer stoppages Sets up and dismantles support facilities for Town sponsored special events Helps with snow/ice removal, storm recovery, and other emergencies during and outside of normal work hours Picks up garbage, trash, and other refuse such as brush, bagged grass, leaves, recyclables, construction debris, bulk items, and appliances and places it on truck Holds on to the rear of moving garbage truck, at low speeds, from stop to stop, while collecting trash and/or recyclables Helps the chipper equipment operator collect and chip yard waste/brush Performs “Emergency Response Duty” once qualified Performs other duties as assigned Skills & Qualifications High School graduate or GED required Requires possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to pass the Maryland Medical Examiner’s Certificate Requirements and obtain a DOT Physical Card Ability to demonstrate the safe and proper use of basic hand tools Ability to operate and understand applicable safety precautions as they relate to a rear-loaded truck Ability to follow spoken instructions Ability to demonstrate reading comprehension and be able to write legibly Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers Ability to walk steps, use ladders, bend, kneel, reach, push, pull, lift, move, and carry items +/- 100 lbs.
