Job Summary Whether it's control system retrofitting, system migrations (greenfield or legacy migration), or control system upgrades, the Field Controls Service Engineer is a critical part of the team.
The Field Controls Engineer position at Cross Company Process Solutions Group is primarily responsible for handling a variety of tasks involving the configuration, commissioning, and startup efforts for a range of projects.
Field Service Control Engineers work with a variety of different PLCs, HMIs, and manufacturing controls system applications including ABB, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, DeltaV, and many others.
Field Controls Service Engineering positions with Cross work closely with our industrial or manufacturing customers, often operating as an extension of local engineering teams.
In that capacity, this Controls Engineering position may require travel to customers during regular business hours with minimal overnight trips.
Major Job Responsibilities Control engineers for PLCs must have the ability to handle industrial facility process automation implementation utilizing Cross Company in-house integration methods coupled with vendor-supplied hardware and software Field Controls Service Engineers work closely with customers, plant managers, or engineering teams to ensure the needs of the project or service call are met Control system engineers with Cross also collaborate with our sales team to guarantee the requirements for the project are planned for, understood, and appropriately implemented Further, they interact directly with our customers in the industrial manufacturing world after project or service call completion to support any post-project issues that may arise Controls Service Engineers operate as a functioning team member to support large projects.
This may include collaborating with other on-site engineers/engineering teams, sales teams, and other stakeholders Additional Responsibilities Sales Sales responsibilities for Control Systems Service Engineers include occasionally supporting sales staff by reviewing sales proposals prior to customer presentations They may also further support sales by acting as the technical consultant on potential or future industrial projects Engineering Process engineers for field controls service also work directly with larger engineering groups for bigger projects or act as a project manager for smaller projects Administrative This engineering position is required to be able to complete the associated ISO paperwork for control service projects or relevant service calls on a monthly basis Enters their time in the engineering database on a weekly basis Position Specification Education and Experience A 4-year degree in engineering, programming, or a related technology field or a 2-year technical degree with equivalent related experience Experience working on-site in plant process control applications and with process control systems Familiarity with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), Distributed Control Systems for process manufacturing facilities, and various SCADA packages I/O checkout site experience is also required Knowledge Requirements Industrial programming experience in manufacturing environments.
This includes hands-on experience with reactors, distillation, combustion controls, batch applications, mixing and metering, as well as continuous and batch chemical production Platform programming experience with any of the following: ABB, Siemens PCS7 and drives, Rockwell ControlLogix, PlantPAX, and FactoryTalk, Emerson DeltaV, Yokogawa Centum, Honeywell Experion Experience writing technical specifications and design documents Fluent Mathematical skills and problem solving expertise needed Fluent PC/Computer skills including Internet based tools, Outlook, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Excellent verbal and written communication skills Demonstrated ability to implement technical solutions tailored to a specific project Additional Attributes Excellent interpersonal skills at all levels of customer contact Understanding and application of business ethics and a high level of professional integrity The ability to listen, formulate a plan, then enact that plan Self-motivated self-starter capable of working independently with minimal supervision An analytical thought process with good decision making and problem solving skills Excellent organizational skills Open-minded, innovative, and resourceful Able to work well under pressure and handle stressful situations well Able to manage change easily and quickly adapt or pivot based on project needs, stakeholder requirements, or outside pressures Can function cooperatively in a team environment Integrate, retain, and synthesize new information quickly Physical Demands and Work Environment The work environment varies from typical office environment to plant site environment Travel typically varies from 40% to 60% depending on work assignments.
The majority of the travel will be during office hours and not overnight.
Individuals may need to sit or stand as needed.
Requires walking primarily on a level surface for varying periods throughout the day in the plant site area.
Could involve long periods of Computer work.
Able to lift or carry up to 40 lbs.

Postural activities include climbing, maneuvering, bending, stooping, kneeling.
Crouching, crawling above, under and around machinery, equipment and occasionally includes reaching, handling, touching grasping machine parts, controls, control panels, levers, and switches as needed.
Ability to climb ladders, stairs, platforms and scaffolding to diagnose/troubleshoot process and equipment occasionally.
Ability to work in non-permit required spaces and at heights of 15' to 20'.
Physical effort required, continuous mental and visual attention required While working in the plant site environment will be supporting 7 day a week operation; may require working more than 40 hours to support the work efforts The performance of this position includes exposure to the manufacturing areas where certain areas require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as Safety Glasses with Side Shields and Hearing Protection.
Primary environment: ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office environment.
Required to be able to read documents and computer screens.
