PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Damage Prevention inspector is primarily responsible for marking underground BGE facilities to meet legal requirements, safety regulations, marking standards, and technical specifications in an effort to minimize the number of underground facility damages on BGE's system.
The inspector will work closely with both internal and external parties to provide support to excavators and ensure facilities are protected and marked accurately.
They must be able to independently manage their daily activities to protect BGE's system in their assigned territory and assist in other areas when necessary.
Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Locates and marks underground BGE facilities with a heavy focus on critical facilities (75%)
Patrols critical underground facilities (10%)
Assists excavators with unknown, incorrectly marked, or missing facilities (10%)
Other duties as assigned (5%)
JOB SCOPE
- Decisions will typically be made independently by inspectors in their respective areas although some items will require deference to supervision Inspectors will work with internal and external parties, including BGE gas and electric crew leaders and 2nd/3rd party contract supervision
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated ability to interpret fiber optic prints, construction drawings, gas/electric maps and records Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, schedule, manage, and coordinate own daily work activities Strong interpersonal and communication skills Ability to anticipate and resolve problems promptly and effectively Ability and willingness to work rotating shift work, on holidays and weekends, and overtime and be on call as required Valid driver's license and ability to meet Company driving standards Must pass the US DOT required chemical test/pre-assignment drug test Must be able to pass applicable BGE operator qualifications High school diploma or the equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience Two or more years of construction experience or the equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience locating underground facilities Demonstrated knowledge of BGE's gas, electric, and fiber facilities Demonstrated knowledge of Maryland Code: Title 12 'Underground Facilities' (MD's Damage Prevention law)
