ELIGIBILITY: Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months.
The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check.
PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.
CLASS DESCRIPTION An Automotive Lead Mechanic assigns, reviews and participates in the work of automotive mechanics engaged in diagnostic, installation, maintenance and repair work on a variety of heavy trucks, automotive, heavy equipment and other mechanical equipment, and performs highly specialized repair or rebuild work.
Work of this class involves leading automotive mechanics but does not involve full supervisory duties or responsibilities.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior.
Employees in this class may work shift work including weekend hours and are subject to call back.
Work is performed in an automotive repair shop where unpleasant odors and dirty and greasy shop conditions are regularly encountered.
Work requires strenuous physical exertion including lifting, bending, crawling and periods of prolonged standing.
SELECTION PROCESS All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their application will be placed on the eligible list without further examination.
The license, training, and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must: EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
AND EXPERIENCE: Have five years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and other mechanical equipment, including repair and installation of hydraulic systems on a variety of specialized and heavy equipment.
OR NOTES (EQUIVALENCIES): Have six months of additional experience in automotive maintenance and repair work may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement or completion of one year of the required coursework in an automotive mechanic curriculum in an accredited high school, vocational school or college or university may be substituted for one year of the experience requirement or an associate's degree from an accredited college or university in automotive technology or a related field may be substituted for two years of the experience requirement.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND CERTIFICATIONS: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.
Some positions in this class require a valid Maryland Class A or B Commercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of the operation and repair of various gasoline and diesel vehicles and specialized equipment, including engines, transmissions, clutch assemblies, hydraulic systems and other complex components.
Knowledge of the tools, equipment and machinery used in the repair of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
Skill in overhauling engines, transmissions, fuel systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other major components on vehicles and specialized equipment.
Ability to read and interpret service manuals, parts catalogs, schematics and written work rules.
Ability to prepare and maintain records.
Ability to give work direction to others.
EXAMINATION PROCESS Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the qualifications for this recruitment.
Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least 6 months.
The examination will consist of a rating of their education, training, and experience as presented on their application and as they relate to the requirements of the position.
They may be required to complete supplemental questions to further examine specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of the position.

NOTES: Employees will receive an hourly stipend for up to eight ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certificates obtained and maintained.
Some positions in this class require Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications for F2 through F8 and E1 through E4 issued by EVT Certification Commission, Inc.
Employees must provide their own tools.
NOTE: Those eligible who are under final consideration for appointment to some positions in this class will be required to authorize the release of criminal conviction information.
