Job Description
The Town of Bel Air is accepting applications for the position of Part-Time Computer Network Support Specialist in the Department of Technology.
This position assists the Technology Manager with tasks and responsibilities within the department, including but not limited to analyze, test, troubleshoot, and evaluate existing network systems, such as local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), cloud networks, servers, and other data communications networks.
Perform network maintenance to ensure networks operate correctly with minimal interruption.
Handles highly confidential information/material and must demonstrate trustworthiness and integrity.
This position has a flexible work schedule, 24 hours per week, and is under the general supervision of the Technology Manager and is defined as a “Critical Employee” who is on call 24/7.
Network maintenance (switch firmware upgrade, firewall firmware upgrade, hardware replacement, etc.
) must occur during off hours when most employees are not at work.
Essential Functions (Functions listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.
The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
) Back up network data.
Configure security settings or access permissions for groups or individuals.
Analyze and report computer network security breaches or attempted breaches.
Identify the causes of networking problems, using diagnostic testing software and equipment.
Document network support activities.
Configure wide area network (WAN) or local area network (LAN) routers or related equipment.
Upgrade switch and firewall firmware Troubleshoot network or connectivity problems for users or user groups.
Provide telephone support related to networking or connectivity issues.
Evaluate local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) performance data to ensure sufficient availability or speed, to identify network problems, or for disaster recovery purposes.
Analyze network data to determine network usage, disk space availability, or server function.
Perform routine maintenance or standard repairs to networking components or equipment.
Configure and define parameters for installation or testing of local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), routers, switches, controllers, wireless access points, VOIP, or related networking equipment.
Install new hardware or software systems or components, ensuring integration with existing network systems.
Install or repair network cables, including fiber optic cables.
Monitor industry Websites or publications for information about patches, releases, viruses, or potential problem identification.
Create or update technical documentation for network installations or changes to existing installations.
Train users in procedures related to network applications, software or related systems.
Test repaired items to ensure proper operation.
Install and configure wireless networking equipment.
Maintain logs of network activity.
Document help desk requests and resolutions.
Research hardware or software products to meet technical networking or security needs.
Create or revise user instructions, procedures, or manuals.
Configure and monitor Syslog for critical network infrastructure.
Configuration of Cisco network switches and wireless access points via CLI.
Other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proven experience as a network support specialist or in a similar role; Strong knowledge of network protocols, routing, and switching; Familiarity with network security practices and technologies; Proficiency in configuring and managing network hardware (routers, switches, firewalls); Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills; Solid understanding of network monitoring tools; Strong communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to work independently and as part of a team; Ability to maintain complex records and prepare reports; Capable of handling confidential material.
Minimum Requirements, Experience, and Training Three years of experience providing computer network support service in a medium to large organization; bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field (or equivalent experience); Relevant certifications (e.
g.
, CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA) is a plus; Expertise in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook, is required; Willingness to vary work hours as needed, sometimes with little notice, maintain a flexible schedule; A valid non-commercial driver’s license with no more than three (3) points; Ability to walk steps, use ladders, bend, kneel, reach, push, pull, lift, move, and carry items that weight up to twenty pounds frequently or more occasionally; Sitting for extended periods of time viewing a computer monitor and detailed data.
Requires repetitive motion in the operation of a computer.
