ELIGIBILITY: Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months.
The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check.
PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.
CLASS DESCRIPTION An Automotive Mechanic Apprentice is a four-year State-approved program where incumbents learn to perform a wide range of diagnostic, installation, maintenance and repair duties on a variety of automotive, heavy truck, heavy equipment and other mechanical equipment.
Work of this class involves no lead or supervisory duties.
Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical supervisor and a specific number of hours of classroom training.
Employees in this class may work shift work including weekend hours.
Work is performed in an automotive repair shop where unpleasant odors and dirty and greasy shop conditions are regularly encountered.
Work requires some strenuous physical exertion including lifting, bending, crawling and periods of prolonged standing.
SELECTION PROCESS All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their application will be placed on the eligible list without further examination.
The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity.
It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must.
EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate.
AND EXPERIENCE: Have one year of automotive experience.
OR NOTES (EQUIVALENCIES): Have Graduated from an accredited Vocational Technical or Instructional program in the automotive field may substitute for one year of automotive experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND CERTIFICATIONS: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.
This is a four-year apprenticeship program, and a contract is required for the term of the apprenticeship program.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Ability to understand Maryland State Apprenticeship program requirements.
Ability to follow instructions orally and in writing.
Ability to successfully complete on-the-job training and classroom instruction requirements.
Ability to handle the required tools and equipment safely and effectively.
EXAMINATION PROCESS Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the qualifications for this recruitment.
Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least six months.
