Job Description
University of Maryland Medical Center is currently recruiting a Family or Adult Nurse Practitioner for the Substance Abuse Consultation Service.
The selected candidate will become part of a large group of nurse practitioners within the University of Maryland Medical System.
The Substance Abuse Consultation Service provides assessment and referral services to individuals admitted to inpatient medical services at UMMC, who also have a comorbid substance abuse diagnosis.

Performs medical examination, then establishes a diagnosis and proposed treatment plan.
Obtains medical, addiction and pain histories.
Performs interval histories and reviews current medication therapy.
Provides therapeutic recommendations for managing symptoms of withdrawal from substances including but not limited to alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines.
Provides recommendations for long term medication management of substance abuse.
Develops a plan of care to include medication therapy, physical therapy, diet therapy, other therapy alternatives, and lifestyle changes.
Reviews care plan with patient and responds to all questions or concerns.
Answers patient phone calls and triages to appropriate practitioner.
Serves as educational resource to staff, students, patients, and families.
Coordinates aftercare for substance abuse treatment.
Provides recommendations for pain management in patients with substance abuse.
Provides brief counseling/ psychotherapy and motivational interviewing as indicated.
Collaborates with an interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, and registered nurses.
Required: 8-4 M-F, 1 Sat and Sun per month
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Family or Adult Nurse Practitioner certification required
Experience in Substance Abuse / Addiction Medicine
Master’s of Science in Nursing
Current DEA and CDS
Current licensure with Maryland Board of Nursing
