Position Summary: Performs complex technical analysis of cancer patient data.
Assumes direct responsibility for accuracy, completeness, and data entry of information collected.
In compliance with JHMI, the American College of Surgeons, and the State of Maryland, analyzes and interprets all available patient data to determine extensive coding classifications including ICD-O.
Determines selection, evaluation and analysis of diagnosis in order to satisfy criteria for entry into cancer data base.
Maintains all information to obtain annual follow-up on patients entered into cancer data base for purposes of patient care management, research, epidemiological studies, state, and national data submission.
Performs other assigned projects.
Competencies: Education: High School Diploma Required.
The CTR eligible candidate must meet education and experience requirements through ONE of the following four routes: Successful completion of 160 hours of work practicum in a CTR staffed Cancer Registry (may be part of a NCRA approved program curriculum).
Successful completion of an NCRA accredited Associate Degree Program OR Successful completion of an NCRA accredited Certificate Program and successful completion of a minimum of an Associate’s degree or equivalent (60 college-level credits).

Course work must include two semesters of Human Anatomy and Human Physiology or equivalent, with a grade of C or better.
Successful completion of 1,950 hours (equal to one year full time) experience in the Cancer Registry field.
Knowledge: Requires comprehensive knowledge of biology, anatomy, physiology and all body systems and has complete understanding of cancer diagnosis and treatment for each site of cancer.
Knowledge of tumor registry coding scheme ICD-O, ICD10, all staging systems (AJCC, SEER summary and collaborative staging), data entry, and criteria for reporting cases.
Normally acquired in 12-24 months experience in an approved cancer registry.
Skills: Requires proficiency in abstracting and data entry into selected databases.
Must be able to demonstrate coding principles.
Requires strong analytical ability to analyze, interpret and summarize pertinent clinical data.
Requires excellent interpersonal communication skills sufficient to interact with internal and external resources in the retrieval of clinical data.
Requires ability to work independently on assigned projects.
Required Licensure, Certification, Etc.
: Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) in good standing or CTR eligible REQUIRED.
Work Experience: Minimum one year experience as an analyst/data collector in a medical setting with experience in ONCOLOG and RQRS preferred.
