General Summary of Position
Under the supervision of registered nurse, performs a variety of technical duties related to preparing and assisting with invasive surgical procedures and turnover.
Interprets the surgical schedule and implements individualized care plans based on the related needs of the patient.
These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Health's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality and safety standards, and SPIRIT Values.
Complies with governmental regulations and accreditation standards.
Assists the nursing staff/provider with pre-operative preparations as directed.
Prepares instruments, surgical carts, supplies, and other equipment; assists in the basic setup and breakdown of equipment and patient areas to expedite turnover under the direction of the surgical team.
Actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
Assists perioperative team with provision of comfort and support for preoperative patients.
Demonstrates sensitivity to patient's care and privacy.
Ensures complete hand-off to oncoming shift and obtains full hand-off from outgoing shift.
Initiates and assists with CPR when indicated.
Assists with case preparation, following preference card guidelines.
Maintains the cleanliness and safety of patient rooms/environment by distributing and changing linen/towels, checking bed-side rails and safety restraints, etc.
Assists with environmental services support such as linen management, trash removal, and cleaning patient rooms as needed.
Functions as a technical resource person for OR staff providing information related to minimally invasive equipment and instrumentation.
Participates in the equipment cleaning, in accordance to infection control procedures/standards and aseptic techniques when applicable in the perioperative areas.
Actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
Transports and/or escorts patients during discharges and transfers.
Provides support services to perioperative team such as delivering specimens to the laboratory, equipment, and supplies, etc.

Reviews inventory system reports for accuracy and completeness.
Takes appropriate action to resolve issues identified.
Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems.
Check and inspect equipment daily such as monitors, booms pumps, insufflators, printers and lights.
Provide immediate trouble shooting of surgical equipment.
Orders necessary supplies to maintain par levels, etc.
Receives and stocks equipment and supplies and maintains orderly supply and utility rooms.
Checks sterile supplies for sterility integrity, where applicable.
Restocks supplies in patient rooms.
Opens sterile supplies using aseptic technique; breaks down contaminated field, as directed by perioperative team.
Performs pre-clean and transports fiber optic scopes.
Attends staff meetings, committees, ongoing educational offerings, and participate in multidisciplinary quality, safety, and service improvement teams.
Represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.

Minimum Qualifications Education High School Diploma or GED or equivalent required and knowledge of aseptic technique required and Experience 1-2 years 2 years related experience required One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Licenses and Certifications CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant from Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) required Successful completion of department specific training for OR Equipment Technicians required and BLS - Basic Life Support required and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong verbal communication skills, strong listening skills, and excellent organizational skills.
Ability to read and write with basic knowledge of math.
Working knowledge of various computer software applications.
Able to work quickly, accurately, and independent with little or no direction.
Reliable and able to follow detailed instructions.
Able to work under stress and remain calm in emergency situations.
