Join us in serving our Maryland residents, visitors, and businesses! The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) The Secretary’s Office is seeking a dynamic candidate with innovative ideas and solutions to lead MDOT’s Washington Area Transit Office.
This position serves as MDOT’s liaison to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and oversees the Department’s WMATA portfolio.
This work includes staffing the Maryland WMATA Board members, advising the Department on WMATA policy, and coordinating with Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties on transit planning issues.
MDOT is looking to strengthen its WMATA policy and oversight activities and create a true transit policy think tank in this position.
The Director also oversees the activities of the Washington Suburban Transit Commission, a bi-county agency representing the State of Maryland, Montgomery County, and Prince George’s County.
The Commission facilitates planning, coordinating, and funding for transit services in the Maryland-National Capital Region, including WMATA, Montgomery County’s Ride-On, Prince George’s County’s The Bus, and other providers in the region.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Serving as MDOT’s liaison to WMATA, providing a clearinghouse for WMATA policy issues and communication.
Developing and advancing MDOT’s policy agenda on WMATA issues, consistent with the Moore-Miller Administration’s Leave No One Behind Agenda.
Evaluating the WMATA budget and transit policy proposals.
Working closely with Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties on WMATA policy and regional transit planning issues.
Creating a true policy “think tank” commensurate with the level of investment that Maryland provides to WMATA.
Developing a work program that advances key policy issues to help yield better transit while managing budgetary and other policy concerns.
Staffing the Maryland WMATA Board Members by attending WMATA Board meetings and jurisdictional discussions and regularly briefing the Board Members.
Supporting the work of the Washington Suburban Transit Commission (WSTC), including both the Commissioners and Staff.
Ensuring that WSTC meets its duties and requirements.
Overseeing consultant work on WMATA policy issues.
Coordinating with MDOT’s Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) team, the State Highway Administration (SHA), and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) to advance transit issues in the Washington region, including joint development, priority bus lane treatments, transit investments along the 495-270 corridor, and local transit enhancements.
This position is a hybrid position and allows for the combination of telework and in-office work.
The current vacancy exists at the MDOT Secretary’s Office in Hanover, Maryland (Anne Arundel County).
The Director will split time between the Hanover and New Carrollton offices of MDOT.

Experience: Six (6) years of experience in administrative or professional work.
Two (2) years of this experience must have involved one or more of the following: The supervision of other employees, overseeing and coordinating the general operations of a unit, applying rules and regulations, or exercising responsibility for the development of policies or procedures.
Three (3) years of this experience must have focused on public policy evaluation, budgetary oversight, or transportation and transit policy specifically.
