General Summary/Purpose: Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is seeking an Animal Research Specialist who provides clinical, operative, and post-operative care and other research support for rodents (mice and rats), rabbits, pigs, nonhuman primates and other species.
The specialist will also perform microsurgical procedures as well as provide technical and anesthetic support for research faculty (principal investigators) and postdoctoral research fellows during clinical surgeries and case management.
The specialist will make decisions regarding research projects that may require assessment, revision of objectives, or altering scientific direction; considers resources and lab priorities when making decisions.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities: Clinical Care and Health Maintenance Perform microsurgical procedures in small and large animal models related but not limited to transplantation, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, tissue and organ preservation, stem cell therapy.
Administer medications for treatment via multiple routes including oral and injectable.
Perform routine sedation and monitoring for diagnostic work-up, sample collection, and clinical care.
Provide technical support for faculty and postdoctoral research fellows during clinical and surgical care, including anesthesia and monitoring.
Obtain diagnostic samples from all species including blood, urine, and various tissue sites.
Research Support Assist investigators in various research protocols, including microsurgical procedures, treatments, sample collection, and routine sedation.
Perform post-operative monitoring, palliative care, and documentation for research procedures ranging from routine sedations, tissue and sample collection, to major operative procedures.
Understand the procedures, humane endpoints, and experimental goals of large animal research protocols and ensure compliance with those protocols and applicable regulations and policies.
Participate in assessment, revision of objectives, and altering scientific direction of research projects.
Teaching Teach investigators, residents and postdoctoral research fellows, and technical staff to perform various microsurgical and technical procedures.
Train personnel in routine clinical care, daily maintenance of animals under medical treatment, for a variety of species.
Administrative Responsibilities Maintain clinical animal records (paper and electronic).
Assist with IACUC protocol preparation.
Complete monitoring forms and any project-specific documentation required for post-procedural care or other research support.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of current regulations, policies and principles for the care and use of laboratory animals.
Knowledge and experience with basic surgical and microsurgical techniques and procedures.
Ability to handle, restrain and determine the sex of laboratory animals without causing injury or harm to animal, self, and others.
Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
Ability to read and write in order to maintain records, read instructions, labels, etc.
Ability to interact and work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a knowledgeable, respectful and courteous manner.
Ability to discuss animal related projects with investigators and report these discussions to the supervisor.
Ability to work under environmental conditions that require the use of safety equipment.
Ability to lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in biology, chemistry or related field required.
2 years laboratory experience in the specialty or performing related techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications Certified veterinary technician strongly preferred.
Four years related laboratory work experience preferred.
